1989 included a number of changes and revisions. The ‘Z’ designation was dropped. It received a new more streamlined front-end treatment that included cooling slots and a lower air dam to help improve wind dynamics. This gave it a distinct “wraparound” look.

A power bulge hood displayed “Intercooled Turbo” decal, integral parking/turn lights and new built-in driving lamps.  New ground effect spoilers, a rear fascia and liftback “whale tail” spoiler were also added. The interior now came standard with the Chrysler Infinity I sound system and the leather-wrapped sport steering wheel.

Both were previously only available as options. Standard on the Shelby was the new 2.2-liter SOHC multipoint EFI inter-cooled Turbo II. It included a specially tuned intake manifold to provide better low-end response and higher acceleration output.

It was partnered with Dodge’s high-capacity five-speed close-ratio manual overdrive transaxle. Horsepower remained unchanged from the previous year delivering 174 hp @ 5200 rpm with 200 lb-ft @ 2400 rpm, compression ratio of 8.0:1.

The balance-shafted 2.5-liter SOHC multipoint electronic fuel injection Turbo I with three-speed automatic was a no-cost option on the Shelby.  It produced 150 hp @ 4800 rpm with 180 lb-ft torque at 2000 rpm.

Shelby’s tight “S” curve-type suspension features race-tuned springs and toned gas-charged shocks. New stamped lower control arms with large-diameter in-line bushings are included for reduced abruptness and a smoother ride.

The power-assisted steering has a 14:1 ratio for quick response. Performance-tuned position-sensitive struts and shocks, spring rates, and large solid antisway bars. All part of the Shelbyís maximum performance suspension.

New Standard ultra-high performance four-wheel vented front and rear disc brakes. The Shelby system features larger calipers and rotors than the standard system. It has 241.7 square inches of front and 177.8 square inches of rear brake “swept” area.

Tires were P205/55VR16 Goodyear Eagle unidirectional, speed-rated performance handling radials are mounted on new 16 inch light-weight aluminum unidirectional “pumper” wheels. Their contoured slots have been proven to assist brake cooling in racing applications.

Full boost is up to 50% faster than the non-VNT engine and virtually eliminates Turbo “lag”.  The VNT Turbo engine incorporates counter-rotating balance shafts which smooth operation throughout the engine speed range — A technology shared with the Porsche 944.A 2.5-liter SOHC multipoint EFI intercooled Turbo with three-speed automatic was available as a no cost option.

It produced 150 hp @ 4800 with 180 lb-ft @ 2000.Race-tuned front suspension included positive-sensitive gas-charged front struts that adjust automatically to road irregularities, power-assisted rack-and-pinion maximum control steering with a tight 14:1 ratio and oversized solid anti-sway bars.

The ultra-high performance four-wheel power-assisted vented disc brake system had larger calipers and rotors. Speed-rated P205/55VR16 unidirectional steel-belted radials were mounted on 16 inch cast aluminum unidirectional “pumper” wheels that help cool the brakes.

The exterior featured full wraparound front and rear fascias. Body side ground effects and rear “whale tail” spoiler. Integral fog lights were new for 1990 as was the Shelby a new monochromatic paint treatment.
