This Daytona Shelby Z was built at the St. Louis, Missouri plant as an early 1987 pilot car.In late 1987, Dodge motorsports was interested in having the Newman-Sharp race team run Daytonas in the SCCA Trans Am series.
The Shelby Z was sent to the Team Shelby race shop in Rochester Michigan for painting over the Christmas holidays.
It was painted in the Newman-Sharp color scheme of Mille Miglia red and Adria blue. The body received Direct Connection side skirts which were finished off with hand cut red reflective Dodge lettering. The rear and hood lettering are also from Direct Connection.
No modifications were made to the Shelby Z’s power train, chassis, suspension, brakes or interior. Unfortunately, this Shelby Z did not lure Newman-Sharp away from their long time partnership with Datsun/Nissan.
