The Daytona received a number of changes in 1987 as well as the introduction of the performance-tuned Daytona Shelby Z which replaced the Turbo Z. The new body styling included pop-up headlamps, chin spoiler, broad-banded taillights and wrap-around rear spoiler.

The interior was changed slightly for a more modern look and feel. The cockpit-style dash design was dominated by a standard electromechanical instrument cluster.

The Shelby Z’s came standard with a recalibrated multipoint electronic fuel injection inter-cooled 2.2-liter Turbo I for faster acceleration and quicker starts. This, combined with the new high capacity five-speed close-ratio Getrag gear set manual transaxle produced power of 175 hp at 4800 rpm, with 200 lb-ft of torque at 3200 rpm.

The compression ratio was 8.1:1. The ’87 Shelby Z went from 0-50 in 5.0 seconds.Vented four-wheel disc brakes provided safe, sure stops and a maximum performance suspension for the lowest body roll of the three Daytona models.

15 x 6.5 inch five-stud cast aluminum wheels with P225/50VR15 unidirectional performance handling steel-belted radials.
